Four persons lamented the poor education and vocational training opportunities available for disadvantaged people within Australia. While the nation had a world class system, it was centralised to meet the ‘norm’ and urbanised mass of Australians. While recognising that it was impossible to change the system’s targets, the small group believed strongly that individuals can make a difference and help improve the lives of others.
Working together, by June 1998, a not-for-profit Registered Training Organisation (RTO number 5811) started operations focused on providing vocational pathways for rural and regional youth, women attempting to re-enter the workforce and small country businesses. Remember, it was a different time in Australia – a time focused on urban activity and corporate need.
The RTO remained a ‘not-for-profit’, managed by a volunteer board, identifying training needs within disadvantaged sectors of our communities and opening opportunities for individuals to build skills and move forward in society. It became one of the first RTOs in Australia to move online as it helped in the rollout of Internet services across rural and remote areas.
During this time there were natural changes within the management board but the primary vision – enhancing the lives of people through vocational training – remained. By 2025, the existing board, while still passionate about the work, were tired – it was time for renewal. In late 2025, a new board and CEO was established yet the same vision and focus were evident in their efforts to move forward.
TEIA remains focused on building people’s opportunities – it stands as an example that individuals can make a difference in growing healthy and respectful communities.
At TEIA, we’re proud to be part of that journey, helping every learner build a future they can be proud of.
